Unlike Ontario's harmonized HST, British Columbia operates a dual sales tax structure. Federal GST at 5% is collected on behalf of the CRA, while provincial PST at 7% is collected and remitted separately to the BC Ministry of Finance. Each tax has its own registration, its own return cycle, and its own compliance rules.

BC voted against HST in a 2011 referendum and returned to the separate GST + PST system — which means BC businesses carry two distinct tax filing obligations that many other provinces don't. Missing a PST return or miscategorizing taxable vs. exempt sales can trigger penalties from the BC Ministry of Finance.
